-The greek words Palaeos meaning old, ont meaning creature, and logos for speech or thought. 

-Study of organisms of the past to determine their evolution, their interactions with each other, and with their environment.

-Fossils come from preserved signs of past life (feces, plants, animals, nests, footprints, etc.)

-Fossils are made in a variety of different ways;
